Day 16: {now west of "W"}

JUNE 17, Lima, Ohio to Markle, Indiana. 75 miles via Ohio Routes 309, 697 and116 and U.S. Route 224.  Average speed today, 10.6 mph. Total mileage 961.

An uneventful – meaning good – day. Faced stiffer headwinds than yesterday in conquering our third state and temps stayed in the low 70s all day – a refreshing change from stifling Pennsylvania even though we kept an extra layer all day long.

Entered Indiana around 1:30 p.m., and should hit Illinois in two more day. There we will break, visiting my mom, who lives in suburban Winnetka.

Today we continued what has become a routine: crossing state’s on small east-west routes and finding accommodations –usually cheap motels – where our dinky roads cross interstate or larger highways.

Few difficulties today: Ben busted a spoke and took a low-speed fall that probably would have sent me to the emergency room. He simply got up and kept riding.

Ben and Chris try a June 17 self portrait at the Indiana state line.
