Day 49: {now at point "T"}

JULY 24, Cedar City, Utah, to Milford, Utah, 56 miles via Utah Routes 130 and 129. Average speed today,  15.2 mph. Total trip mileage to date, 3,152. Average daily mileage since June 1,  58.4.

Out of the hills and into the heat was today’s theme. Our idea was to hook on bright bike lights we bought in Durango and set out at 4 a.m.. The reality was leaving from Cedar City at 6:15 a.m. Our start had been slowed by futile searches for my sunglasses and for Ben ‘s iPod charger cord. By the time we got on the road, the sun was rising and we didn’t need the lights.

But the air was ice cold and we pedaled fast in a futile effort to stay warm. But we did cover ground. We averaged better than 13 mph up the grade between Cedar City and Milford, and flew down the hill. Arrived at Milford by 10:30, where Ben had breakfast and I had lunch at Penny”s Diner, a good 24-hourcafé next to our motel.

The motel and diner, in fact, seemed like the only signs of life in Milford. The downtown featured two closed hotels, two closed restaurants and numerous vacant storefronts.

But the town grain elevator was operating and hopper cars were still heading out the old Union Pacific tracks.

After a round of golf in Cedar City, Randy found us a new charger cord and sunglasses and brought them to us in Milford.

A word about our short distance today: We didn’t stop at 58 because we were tired. We stopped because the next town up, Baker, Nevada, was 84 miles ahead. Our distances these days are not determined by our energy level, but by where we will stay each night.

Our plan for the  84-mile run to Baker tomorrow? Again start riding at 4 a.m. We’ll see.
